SPINAL INJURIES
SPINAL SURGERY
Back pain and neck pain are the most common symptoms encountered in any orthopaedic clinic
and ours is no exception.
The causes of back pain are legion and range from disc prolapse to emotional stress and
depression. An accurate diagnosis is paramount for successful treatment. Most conditions are
diagnosed through detailed history- taking and a thorough clinical examination. Basic blood
investigations and plain radiographs aid in the diagnosis. With the advent of CT scan and
MRI, myelography has become largely redundant.
Spinal surgery has come of age too. The use of the operative microscope has made disc surgery
minimally invasive and very safe. Laminectomy, spinal canal decompression, foraminatomy are
all performed with the aid of the operating microscope. The other major spinal surgeries that
we routinely undertake are spinal stabilization and fusion, both anterior and posterior, and
scoliosis correction surgery.
